The Laguna Maasai Foundation is a student-organized club at Laguna Beach High School. It began in 2012 when Mr. Shen, one of the MUN program's advisors, visited the Oololaimutia Elementary School in Maasai Mara, Kenya. The school was impoverished, overcrowded, and underfunded, lacking comforts that range from sanitary water to adequate school supplies. After hearing about Mr. Shen's experiences in Kenya, several MUN delegates organized the MUN Foundation as a branch of the MUN program. The Foundation aims to raise money both for the Oololaimutia school and for the entire village in which it is located.
Bracelet Program
One of the main focuses of the Foundation is to raise money for the Maasai village by selling beaded jewelry hand-crafted by the tribe's women. This jewelry is just one example of the deep and rich culture that exists in the community. The Maasai women of the village make and ship to us their jewelry which we sell to the public. Local residents here gain access and awareness of the beautiful jewelry from an exquisite community that often goes unseen, and 100% of proceeds from the jewelry go to the Maasai to improve the lives of their women.
Delegates are welcome to donate any amount of money at any point during the committee session. Any contributions, however small or large, make a huge difference to the Maasai people. The committee that raises the most funds will receive a special prize.
In addition, the jewelry created by the Maasai women will be sold next to the snack bar at 2022 conference. Pricing ranges from $5-$30 depending on the item.
